General
What is Bilateral Waves and how does it help me?
It is your personal bilateral studio. It offers a softer place to nest when you need a quiet moment of ease. By combining calming visuals with rhythmic left-to-right audio, it provides a gentle sensory space to help you step back, release daily tension, and restore a sense of internal calm.
What is bilateral music, and how do soundscapes support grounding?
Bilateral music is sound that moves gently from left to right, utilizing alternating auditory patterns to support focus, calm, and presence. Our bilateral soundscapes are designed as self-paced wellness tools for daily grounding and rest. They are intended for personal self-care and general relaxation, and are not a substitute for professional mental healthcare or clinical treatment.
What soundscape collections can I choose from?
Our soundscapes are grouped into nine categories by mood and setting. Each category has its own sound, so you can pick the one that fits your moment.
- Grounding: For a quick pause to be present.
- Still Mind: For when there’s a lot on your mind and you want a quieter place to be.
- Breathing Room: For moments when there’s too much going on and you want space and a slower pace.
- Gentle Uplift: For slower, heavier days when you want something warmer and lighter.
- After Hours: For the end of a busy day, when you want to put your to-do list down and shift into your evening.
- Wind Down: For the end of the evening and your bedtime routine.
- Motivation: For getting started on a task, a project, or your day.
- Quiet Focus: For study, reading, or deep concentration.
- Vivid Melody: For creative projects or a rich background while you relax.
Categories describe the mood or setting each soundscape was designed for. They are not diagnoses, treatment recommendations, or promises of any particular effect, and you’re welcome to choose any soundscape for any moment.
Do I need special equipment to listen to the soundscapes?
We highly recommend stereo headphones or earbuds to fully experience the left-to-right grounding rhythm. If you prefer speakers, ensure they support stereo sound and sit comfortably centered. Because all soundscapes are purely instrumental with no spoken instructions, you can simply press play and relax.
What should I do if the bilateral layer or sound isn’t moving left-to-right on my wireless headphones?
If the bilateral layer (soundscapes) or sound (BLS tool) isn’t playing through your Bluetooth or wireless headphones (e.g., AirPods), switch your microphone setting to your device’s built-in microphone, or switch to wired headphones.
For the most seamless experience, wired headphones are always recommended.
How do I begin a soundscape session and prepare my space?
Find a comfortable place to sit or lie down. Dim the lights and minimize distractions. Put on your headphones, select a soundscape that matches your needs, choose your session length, and press play.
What should I focus on during my soundscape session?
There is no wrong way to practice. You can let your mind track the gentle sweeping sound or rest your eyes on the moving visual waves. If thoughts float in, allow them to pass and gently return your focus to the rhythm.
Can I use Bilateral Waves while working or studying?
Yes. Many of our soundscapes are crafted to support gentle daytime focus and concentration. We recommend saving our deeper relaxation and evening tracks for when you are ready to fully unwind.
Where is Bilateral Waves available?
Anyone worldwide can access and use Bilateral Waves. However, paid subscriptions are currently limited to accounts with a billing address and payment card issued in the United States or Canada. We hope to expand billing options to additional countries in the future.
For Therapists
What tools are included in the therapist’s studio and what do the plans unlock?
The therapist’s studio is built for both telehealth and in-person care, combining real-time bilateral stimulation (BLS) tools for clinician-guided EMDR sessions with soothing bilateral soundscapes for pre- and post-session grounding.
- The Free Studio: Core tools including standard BLS audio tones, visual movement cues, background environments, and foundational soundscapes.
- The Pro Studio: Full access to our expanded tones, cues, backgrounds, and soundscape library, custom waiting room features, practice logo branding, and 2-week client playlists you can create and assign to extend care after sessions. (View our full Pricing Page (opens in a new tab) for details.)
How do I invite a client into a live, shared session?
Click Begin Session in the upper right corner of your dashboard to instantly generate a secure, temporary link. Copy and share this link through your telehealth chat or email, and your client will seamlessly join your space the moment they click it.
What does my client see when I share a session link?
Your client sees a beautiful, distraction-free window showing only your moving visual waves, backgrounds, and synchronized audio. Your clinician dashboard, controls, and settings remain completely hidden from their view.
What is the Connection Safety Stop and how does it work?
This is a built-in protective feature for your live sessions. If your client’s internet drops or they accidentally close their browser window, your studio will automatically pause the active bilateral rhythm. This ensures that no processing sets continue without your guidance and allows you to seamlessly resume once they reconnect.
Can I switch between Traditional and Soundscapes during a session?
Yes. Your studio features automatic Screen Sync, meaning your client’s screen instantly updates in real time to match your view when you change tabs. If you prefer to manage transitions manually, you can adjust this feature in your settings.
What do the Run, Pause, Stop, and Reset controls do?
These live controls manage your active bilateral sets:
- Run: Starts the synchronized bilateral rhythm.
- Pause: Temporarily halts tracking for quick check-ins during a set.
- Stop: Completes the active processing set.
- Reset: Clears your current pacing choices so you can begin fresh.
How does the Create Playlist feature work for at-home support?
Pro members can extend care beyond the live session by building a custom playlist of up to three intentional soundscapes.
Once you click End Session, the live session link automatically transforms into a personalized playlist portal so your client can access their soundscape tools for up to 2 weeks without needing a new link. Your account supports up to 50 active links at a time.
Can I use Bilateral Waves alongside my telehealth platform?
Yes. Designed for online EMDR and virtual care, Bilateral Waves runs in its own browser tab alongside platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, or Doxy.me. Your client joins through a link you copy and share yourself. They don’t create an account or enter their name or email, and the studio never asks for client names or clinical notes.
Live session links expire when you end the session or after 24 hours, and playlist links expire after two weeks. Connections are encrypted, and client session pages load no analytics. Warmth & Waves is not a HIPAA-covered entity, so please keep client names and health information out of the studio, and follow your own privacy and licensing requirements when sharing links.
